Getting Ready for Allergy Season

Published: February 24, 2021

If you suffer from allergies to pollen and other irritants during allergy season, you may look forward to spending your days inside away from the irritants that can trigger inflation and make you sick. But did you know that the air inside your home or workplace may contain more pollutants than the air outside? If you haven’t had your HVAC serviced in a while, your indoor air circulation could be the cause of worsening allergy symptoms.

Allergy Proof Your Home in Alabama

Allergy proof your home for the season, starting with your HVAC. Over half of US homeowners do not maintain their HVAC on a yearly basis. Though your HVAC is designed to filter out all kinds of allergens, if it hasn’t been cleaned it may be blowing them throughout your home instead. It is important to clean your HVAC twice a year, before and after peak use.

If your HVAC has not been cleaned, there is likely a layer of buildup in the ducts, on the coils and encasing the air filter. This buildup may contain pet dander, pollen, dust mites, mold and other common allergens that may irritate your lungs and flare up your sinuses. We recommend having your ducts thoroughly cleaned to remove all the mold and allergens that have built up over time.

HEPA Filter for Allergies

If you have strong allergies, consider changing your filter every month or two rather than the recommended 90 days. This will make sure your filter is always fresh and working properly to combat pesky allergens. A HEPA  filter will be the best defense against airborne allergens in your home. HEPA, or high efficiency particle air, filters provides better resistance against allergens by trapping pollutants in a fine mesh. Most portable air purifiers you can purchase for your home contain a HEPA filter. A portable air purifier together with a clean HVAC can drastically improve the quality of the air in your home this allergy season.

UV Lamp for Allergies in Alabama

A UV lamp can also work in conjunction with your HVAC to eliminate any remaining allergens. UV lights are great for zapping invisible allergens and bacteria before they reach your home. A UV light can be installed inside your HVAC system. The light will kill organic growth to combat mold and bacteria, but will not eliminate other allergens like pet dander and pollen. Ask your tech if a UV light is right for your home.

Your dirty HVAC may be contributing to worsening allergies, but a clean system will help keep allergens outside the home. Take the proper steps to make sure your HVAC is clean and ready for the season so you can breathe easy indoors. Contact us today to set up appointment!
