No one wants to wake up on a freezing morning to discover their furnace has gone out and left them without any heat. Your furnace may stop working or be working improperly for a handful of reasons. Check our list below and reach out to your Service Tech, Inc. HVAC technician to get your furnace running ASAP.
Blocked Air Ducts in the South
If your furnace is running but your house isn’t sufficiently warm or you have cold spots, check the air ducts. The air ducts push the flow of warm air throughout your home, and blocked ducts can restrict the flow. If some rooms are cold while others are warm, your ducts may have cracks or gaps that cause hot air to escape. This doesn’t just make your home cold, it can severely increase your utility bill. Contact your HVAC technician to have your ducts properly sealed.

Faulty Thermostat in Alabama
Make sure the temperature on your thermostat is higher than the current room temperature. This may seem obvious, but a simple thermostat issue could be the cause. Check that your thermostat is working properly by moving the switch to heat instead of cool, and adjusting the temperature about 5 degrees higher than the current room temperature. If the furnace comes on, you’ve solved the problem. If not, it is time to consider other potential issues.
Dirty Air Filter
If you open your grate to find a dusty, grimy air filter, you may have solved the problem. A dirty air filter blocks fresh air from getting to your home, and can even cause the furnace to work overtime trying to push past the blocked particles. This block in airflow can keep heat from circulating as it should, making your home extra chilly. Be sure to change your air filter at least every three months to ensure proper airflow.
Unlit Pilot Light
Is your system on but not heating your home? The problem could be a simple as an unlit pilot light. The pilot light is a tiny flame in your furnace to provide heat. You can relight your pilot light yourself by holding down the ignite button for 30 seconds until you see the flame. If your pilot light is on but your system still isn’t producing heat, check your water heater. If your water heater is also not working properly, this may be a sign of a gas problem.
